Gakar (गाकर) with Spicy Daal

Hmmmm so I am back to add some more spice to the blog. After a busy Saturday afternoon , I was all set to make the evening equally happening with the aroma of spices and thought of filling the platter with an off-beat variety .  I had already decided what and all i am going to cook . It was a perfect combination of an authentic Maharashtrain dish plus a spicy punch from 'hamara INDORE' and a dessert (recipe already shared) to add some relief after the spicy and chatpata dinner. The dinner consisted of : GAKAR with Spicy Daal , Kharda (खरडा)-a special variety of chutney  & Garadu(गराडू) , a root which is also called Yam is a very popular in Indore and a 'must have' in winters. So here comes the recipe.I will also post the next blog about Garadu which happens to be my all time favorite too :-))

Ingredients :

For GAKAR :

Wheat Floor (bit coarse) - 2 cups (also called as जाड़ा आटा)
Oil- 2 tbspn
Carom Seeds (अजवाइन )- 1 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Oil for shallow fry

For Daal  :
Tuar (तुअर दाल) - 1 katori
Garlic Cloves - 4-5
Green Chillies (finely chopped) -3
1 medium onion- finely chopped
Cumin Seeds - 1 tbspn
Salt and Red Chilli Powder -as per taste
Oil for Tadka - 2 tbspn
Finely Chopped Coriander for garnishing

Serves

Time to prepare : 40 mins

Method :

For Gakar
  • Make a dough mixing all ingredients with water. Remember not to knead it too soft . The dough has to be like the one we knead for Puri.
  • Make flat tikkis taking small portions from the dough and make a thumb-size impression gently in the center of the tikki.
  • Make all tikkis and keep them aside.
  • Heat a tawa and put some oil on it.
  • Arrange all the tikkis and cover it for 5-7 minutes keeping the flame on medium.
  • Turn the sides and cook for another 5 minutes.

So now that Gakar is ready , we will make a spicy daal . You can also opt for a Katti-Meethi daal with some garam masala to it.

Spicy Daal:
  • Mix1 glass water and some turmeric powder  with daal and pressure cook for 10 minutes.
  • Take a pan and add oil and heat it.
  • Add crushed garlic cloves, cumin seeds, chopped chillies and onions. Saute till brown.
  • Add chilli powder ( or कांदा-लसून मसाला ) and cooked daal.
  • Add water to give it a consistency .
  • Add salt to taste and garnish it with chopped coriander.
While serving, I had crushed the Gakar and had garnished it with the topping of daal .You can also add some pure ghee to add a desi aroma to it. This is how the platter looked :

So try it and give a treat to yourself on a lazy weekend as i am quite sure that one would like to have a nap after having this sumptuous thali :-)) Happy Cooking !!!
