Roasted Chana Dal Chatni
I am a die-hard fan of Pickles & Chatnis. Somehow I feel that a meal is incomplete without the lip smacking taste of the spices. My nani was one of the best cooks in the world . People who know her well ,still recall the taste of the dishes made by her. During our visit to Pune , she made sure that the small kitchen cupboard was full of small jars of pickles and chatnis.
The sad part of sojourn was watching my mom saying goodbye to her parents with a heavy heart . Whenever nani asked my mom what she should pack for us as dinner - Bread and Chatni / Idli Chatni was my mom's instant reply. This Raw Chana Dal Chatni made by her was one of our favorite chatnis. It is absolutely simple to make and delicious with its nutty taste. Take a look at the recipe:

Ingredients:
- 1 cup Roasted Chana Dal
- 4 Green Chillies
- 2 cloves Garlic
- Salt to taste
- 1/2 tspn Sugar
- 1 tspn Oil
- 2-3 Red Chillies
- 7-8 curry leaves
- 1 tspn Mustard seeds
- A pinch of Asafoetida powder
Serves: 3-4 people
Method:
- In a blender take dal, chopped chillies , garlic, salt and sugar. Add some water and grind it to a coarse paste. You can add more water if needed.
- Pour the chatni in a bowl.
- Heat oil in a pan . Add asafoetida and mustard seeds. Let them crackle. Now add curry leaves and red chillies.
- Add this tempering to the chatni.
- Serve it with Idli / Uttappam. You can also use this chatni as a spread for vegetable sandwich.
- You can also add grated coconut but remember ,chatni with coconut spoils quickly in summers.
